Spiritual wellness comes from following the conscience

The biggest human problem, according to psychiatrist Dr. N.S. Xavier,
is people not living by conscience.

We can use real conscience to make good choices in handling needs like
power, pleasure, esteem and meaning. Much of the conflicts within,
between and among individuals and groups including terrorism and wars
are because of not using conscience.

In his new book Fulfillment Using Real Conscience: Practical Guide for
Psychological and Spiritual Wellness, Dr. N.S. Xavier says we can
promote peace and well-being if people understand the difference
between conscience and superego and use conscience as the master
guide.

Fulfillment Using Real Conscience: Practical Guide for Psychological
and Spiritual Wellness is available on major online bookselling sites,
www.authorhouse.com and through regular bookstores.

Don't wreck your vacation with heat-related illness

Several years ago I spent a fun-filled afternoon on the beach, but
that evening I was sick. I was suffering from heat exhaustion. I had
a headache, dizziness and lightheadedness. I was sweating and had
muscle cramps. My stomach was upset and I felt like vomiting. After
resting in a cool room and drinking lots of water and other fluids, I
was feeling a lot better.

Heat stroke is worse and may require your seeing a doctor, especially
if you're not better in 30 minutes. The symptoms of heat stroke
include an extremely high body temperature, dry, hot skin with no
sweating, rapid, strong pulse, nausea, mental confusion of losing
consciousness, a throbbing headache and seizures or convulsions.

I realized afterward that I could have avoided being sick by being in
the shade and drinking lots of water. It's a good idea to look out
for each other, particularly if you're with young children or elderly
people. Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion but most important
do the things that can prevent heat exhaustion in the first place.

The downside of insulin therapy

According to a report in Dr. Julian Whitaker's Health and Healing
(www.drwhitaker.com), insulin therapy shouldn't be used to handle type
2 diabetes. He cites the example of a 50-year-old woman who is 100
pounds over weight and is taking insulin to handle her diabetes.
"Insulin therapy in the obese type 2 diabetic is a disaster. It's
like treating alcoholics with martinis! Insulin makes overweight
patients gain more weight. This excess weight drives the blood sugar
up even more," writes Dr. Whitaker in his June 2009 newsletter.

How to kill grass on walkways

Here are a couple of ways of killing grass on walkways and drive ways
that were discussed recently at the St. Joseph Herb and Garden Club.

Bleach alone may not kill the grass, but added with oil it is more
effective. The helps the bleach stay on the leaves.

However, an easier and less costly way may be to pour boiling water on
the grass.
