Owners of pets have a bond of
unconditional love from their pets, a sense of loyalty, company, and a
companion who is always around. Many people might think having a pet
could be more work than its worth, but it might be well worth it if it
helps you live a happier healthier life style.
Picking out the perfect pet could be hard. It doesn't have to be a
dog or a cat, although dogs are considered 'man's best friend' and
most cats are loving and comforting. If you don't like mammals, and
don't want to have to do much maintenance or spend much money for
upkeep, you could invest in a fish. Other animals could range from
some kind of amphibian to a hamster or Ginny-pig. Whatever you
decided is best for you, it would be a great addition to your life if
you live alone.
The most common pet is a dog. The advantages of having a dog vary
depending on what kind of dog you get. A small dog might be nice to
have so they can sit on your lap or even sleep in your bed. A big dog
can help you feel a sense of safety and security. You can take your
dog for a walk as a way to get out of the house and get some exercise.
Taking a dog to the park is a great way to socialize and get out and
meet people. Teaching your dog to play games like 'fetch' or new
tricks is a fun way to occupy your time.
Little kittens are also fun to play with! A great way to spend time
would be getting a little toy or string and the cat will love chasing
it. Cats are easy because it doesn't require much to train them.
Just have a litter box, and some food and water and your good to go!
Some things may seem like a hassle like buying food, or taking your
pet to the vet, but it gives you something to do and keeps a person
busy.
Rescuing an animal from the humane society is a great idea! Not only
are you getting a pet, your saving a life, and doing something that
should make you feel good about yourself.
Overall, getting some kind of pet will give you things to do, a
companion who will love you and make you feel better about your life,
helping you live a happier, healthier, longer life.
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

Alabama Music Hall of Fame

By Kyle Francis Aaron
When you think music, what city comes to mind? I bet you didn't think
about Muscle Shoals, Alabama, did you? You would be surprised to learn
just how influential this small northwestern Alabama community has
been on the American music scene. But many of the biggest names in the
music industry have recorded at the Muscle Shoals studios over the
years. Indeed, we never realized how many famous musicians have come
out of Alabama .
The Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia tells the story of the
Alabama music industry, from rhythm and blues, to country, gospel, and
rock and roll. Whatever music you enjoy, it's pretty certain an
Alabama musicians performs it and the Hall of Fame honors it.
Opening in 1990, the Hall of Fame includes exhibits and displays on
Alabama musicians and research facilities, along with the hallowed
gallery where top names in the music industry are honored for their
accomplishments. Every other year an induction banquet is held to
select new performers into the Hall of Fame.
For decades musicians have found their way to nearby Muscle Shoals,
where they have recorded hits that went on to top the charts. Sam
Phillips, a versatile innovator who changed the face of popular music
in the 1940s and 1950s when he brought together the diverse elements
that combined to create rock and roll, got his start in neighboring
Florence, Alabama and owned a radio station in Muscle Shoals. Phillips
formed Memphis Recording Service, working with such artists as B.B.
King, Ike Turner, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and James Cotton. After
producing ten songs for a newcomer named Elvis Presley, Phillips sold
his contract to RCA Records for $35,000 and used that money to expand
his Sun Records label.
In 1969 four musicians opened the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in an
old building that had once housed a casket company, and soon gained
fame as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. The list of performers who
have recorded at the Muscle Shoals studios is long and lofty,
including Joan Baez, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Larry Gatlin,
Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson,
Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cat Stevens, the Commodores, Hank
Williams Jr., the Temptations, Bob Dylan, Cher, Earl Thomas Conley,
Jimmy Buffett, T. Graham Brown, John Conlee, Boz Scaggs, Joe Cocker,
Linda Ronstadt, Eddie Rabbitt, Mac Davis, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billie
"Crash" Craddock, Sawyer Brown, Dr. Hook, Delbert McClinton, Jerry
Reed, Leon Russell, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, the Osmonds, Art Garfunkel,
Paul Anka, T.G. Sheppard, and the Supremes. Today the Muscle Shoals
Sound Studios is a state-of-the-art complex located on the Tennessee
River in Sheffield, Alabama. The Hall of Fame has an impressive
exhibit telling the story of the Muscle Shoals influence on music.
The Alabama Music Hall of fame is located on US Highway 72 in
Tuscumbia, and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot can accommodate any
size RV with ease. Eight
out of 10 U.S. families own barbecue grills. The average outdoor
cooker owns 1.2 grills and the Big Green Egg has made believers of
literally everyone who owns one.
With the many user benefits, the Big Green Egg remains unique among
other kamado cookers. The ceramic parts come with a lifetime guarantee
against damage from normal use. It is weather-impervious and there are
no "hot spots" or flare-ups from within and no need to add charcoal
while cooking. The innovative ceramic material keeps the outside
surface far cooler than any gas grill.
One Big Green Egg has more diverse cooking capabilities than a
warehouse of other grills combined, at any price. As a smoker it
provides a wide range of controlled low temperatures which are easily
maintained at 180° to 250°F. As a grill it sears and cooks foods at
750° F for steakhouse searing, and as an oven it will bake
crispy-crust pizza, bread and desserts as well as a brick oven.
Designed and built for heavy duty use, the EGG cannot be harmed by
extreme external temperature, rain or snow. It cleans up easily, and
inside heat burns off grease and spatters just as with a self-cleaning
oven. It is as close to perfect as a grill can be and will last as
long as your able to grill and eat.
For more information go to http://www.biggreenegg.com/
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

Tips for holiday traveling

by Casey Payton
The holidays can be a very joyous occasion. Families get together and
share stories and eat great food, but if you're traveling this holiday
season it could put some unnecessary stress on you and your family. So
to make things easier the Transportation Security Administration has
listed some helpful tips when traveling.
Before entering the airport, be sure to:
Do not pack or bring Prohibited Items to the airport. Read the
Permitted and Prohibited Items list.
Pack travel-size containers less than 3 ounces comfortably in one,
quart-size plastic, zip-top bag. Learn more.
Place valuables such as jewelry, cash and laptop computers in carry-on
baggage only. Checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped
film.
Declare firearms & ammunition to your airline and place them in your
checked baggage.
If you wish to lock your baggage, use a TSA-recognized lock .
Do not bring lighters or prohibited matches to the airport.
Do not pack wrapped gifts and do not bring wrapped gifts to the
checkpoint. Wrap on arrival or ship your gifts prior to your
departure. TSA may have to unwrap packages for security reasons.
At the airport:
Place the following items IN your carry-on baggage or in a plastic bag
prior to entering the screening checkpoint:
Mobile phones
Keys
Loose change
Money clips
PDA's (personal data assistants)
Large amounts of jewelry
Metal hair decorations
Large belt buckles
Take your laptop and video cameras with cassettes OUT of their cases
and place them in a bin provided at the checkpoint.
Take OFF all outer coats, suit coats, jackets and blazers.
Although there is nothing you can do about long lines and terrible
airplane food, but if keep these tips in mind when you are traveling
and it will surely make things easier for you and your family.
For more information visit www.tsa.gov/index.shtm.
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

When it's raining

by Brandon Moore
During everyday life there are many decisions made, some conscious and
some not. Such as, what to do, where to go, answer the phone or let it
ring. These questions are simple and minuet in the scheme of things,
but when it comes down to it these questions play a bigger role on
your day than you think.
In the hustle and bustle of the everyday life it's hard to stop and
realize the amount of strain your body goes through. Especially this
day in age with the technology boom, people are on the go 24/7. They
eat badly, they don't exercise, it seems there is no time "me time".
Though it's not recognized one of the biggest role players in your
everyday life is something you have absolutely no control over, the
weather.
The weather is such a huge part of our lives but it's hard to realize
it because we don't control it with a remote, phone, or anything else.
We wake up and deal with what the Earth has given us that day, rather
it's rain, snow, or sunshine.
The reason the weather is such a big deal and can put a strain on us
is because it affects people's moods. Your mood has everything to do
with your daily "rituals." The weather controls how you think; feel,
and act and it may be unannounced to you.
Studies have shown that when it is cloudy or raining people are more
likely to be depressed and lazy on those days' viruses when it is
sunny outside.
Kylor Cone, who works at the Maryville Missouri Community Center said,
"When it's raining or drizzling outside, it's hard for me to get
motivated to go work out. Which is something that I do everyday, it's
built into me, like waking up."
This shows why it is harder for people to wake up on rainy mornings,
or why you want to nap on those cloudy afternoons. Your body goes into
somewhat of a shut down mode when the weather isn't cooperating.
When the weather isn't on, it's "A game." Chances are you're not either.
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

Espre, an Acai juice formulation, rates high among antioxidant supplements

Espre, the new antioxidant fruit beverage created by NutriPrima, recently registered the highest nutritional rating ever recorded for its category of health supplement drinks from an independent manufacturing facility.

NutriPrima co-founder John Peterson said Espre set a new standard in September 2008 by registering an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score of 4,581 for a single 1 oz.
serving, the highest ever officially certified and validated for this Acai formulation by Brunswick Laboratories, which holds the U.S. patent for ORAC testing and is considered the gold standard when it comes to evaluating antioxidant drinks.

ORAC is important because it certifies and validates the nutritional quality and content of antioxidant supplements, which are credited with helping prevent health conditions such as cancer and heart disease while providing numerous positive health benefits.

The daily ORAC score suggested by experts is around 3,000 units to have a significant impact on plasma and tissue antioxidant levels. Even though it's darker
earlier and somewhat cooler, you can still do outdoor activity to help
burn extra calories and rev up your metabolism. Begin by adding steps
to your day! Here are some helpful suggestions. Select one or more
to add to your daily activity this week:
- Get off public transportation a few stops early. Walk the rest of
the way to your destination.
- In safe areas, park your car farther away. Increase your walking
time to and from work, grocery store, or mall.
- Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Start with one or two
flights of stairs and add more flights as you increase your stamina.
- Join a health club that's close to work and/or home. A quick
workout can be done at the end or beginning of your day.
- Use the speaker phone or cordless phone. Walk around while talking
on the phone.
- When working at a sedentary job, plan breaks every hour, on the
hour. Get up and move around or stretch. Take a quick 5-10 minute
walk.
- Take a water break. Visit the drinking fountain 8 times a day.
Staying well hydrated can help prevent fatigue due to dehydration.
- Sign up for an exercise class this week. Try something new like
Yoga, Tai Chi, or square dancing!
-Invest in a good aerobics or strength training video. Use it regularly.
- Avoid drive up windows. Load your own groceries in your car; pick
up your own dry cleaning. If you have to stop at a fast food
restaurant, walk in to place your order.
-Lose your remote control. Get up to change channels on your
television, or to select a radio station or compact disk.
- Manage TV time and Internet time. Avoid mindless television
watching for hours and hours and stick with watching only your very
favorite shows. Get up and move during commercial breaks. Set an
alarm when surfing the Internet and when it goes off—get up and move!
- Meet with a friend or coworker. Take a walk and enjoy the outdoors
or spend time problem solving while on the treadmill.
- Schedule your exercise time. Put it in your planner, palm pilot or
mark it on a calendar. Plan ahead by having your walking shoes and/or
work out gear packed and ready to go.
- Plan a family outing that involves activity. Go to the park, go
bowling, fly a kite, or go for a walk—and don't forget the dog!
- Clean out your closets this week. Gather old clothes and toys that
you no longer need. Make plans to give them away to charity.
- Walk for lunch. You can either walk TO lunch or walk INSTEAD of
lunch. Walk to lunch spots at a distance from your office instead of
frequenting the closest place. If you can eat at your desk, take
brisk walk first and then eat your lunch.
- Go shopping! If you haven't done all your Christmas shopping, plan
to go early in the morning and do some mall walking before the stores
open. Then complete your shopping and stop for a healthy lunch!
- Work in the yard. The leaves are falling and there still may be some
clean up to do in your flower beds or vegetable garden. Bag those
leaves and use as compost for next year's garden.
- Play with your kids or grandkids. Children need daily activity for
healthy bodies. Wrestle with them, play catch, freeze tag, kick ball
or hide and seek! It's fun!
-Start an abdominal strengthening program this week. Plan to do as
many crunches as you can keeping your low back on the floor, knees
bent, feet flat on the floor and hands behind your head. Lift your
shoulder blades off of the floor using your stomach muscles.
She suggests you use this list to write your own plan.
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

A thriving marriage

Laura M. Brotherson's article "Happily Married Couples Needed" in Mormon Times was a good reminder about how important it is to do things which will help to make my marriage not only be successful, but also to thrive. Sometimes I get so caught up in the busy day-to-day activities that I forget to do those things which will bring sunshine into my marriage and also my spouse's life.
Here are some keys she gives to help a marriage thrive.

By accepting self and spouse we focus on the positives in each other and I express gratitude about the good things in my spouse.

Emotional connection means an ongoing, open and honest sharing of thoughts and feelings.

Being playful and sharing humor also requires taking time out for each other, like having a weekly date.

A non-sexual touch shows affection and is a key to having a marriage thrive.

Non-sexual touch builds to sexual intimacy.

A desire for personal growth - to continue to grow - allows me to keep in tune and meet my spouse's personal needs.

Life is a shared spiritual journey that leads to something greater than self.

She concludes:

"Thriving in marriage doesn't mean that everything is perfect, but it does mean that you willingly work through the challenges that arise, and make it a priority to make your spouse and your marriage a priority."

"Allowing others to see the love you have for your spouse and the joy you feel in your marriage is one of the ways you can let your light shine and restore some of the luster to the institution of marriage."

Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

Fluoridation and Tea Do Not Mix, Studies Continue to Show

Press release from: New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc
(openPR) - Fluoride added to tap water (fluoridation) puts tea
drinkers at risk of damaged bones, discolored teeth and soft tissue
harm, studies show.
Tea has naturally high fluoride levels. Excess fluoride can weaken
bones and discolor children's un-erupted teeth. When fluoridated water
is used to make tea, fluoride levels consumed can be health damaging.
Four cups, of 20 teas sampled, delivered 0.8 to 1.8 mg of fluoride,
when non-fluoridated water was used, reports Cao et al. in Food
Chemistry.
"Among populations habitually consuming black tea, water fluoridation
is not only unnecessary but also possibly harmful…The target organs of
chronic fluoride intoxication are not only the teeth and skeleton, but
also the liver, kidney, nervous and reproductive systems," they write.
A March 2008 Food and Chemical Toxicology study found up to 4.5, 1.8,
and 0.5 mg/L fluoride in black, green and white teas, respectively,
when brewed for 5 minutes (61 teas sampled).
Brewed teas could contain up to 6 mg/L fluoride depending on the
amount of dry tea used, the water fluoride concentration and the
brewing time, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).
According to 1997 ADA data, 3 and 4 milligrams daily is adequate for
women and men, respectively, to prevent fluoride's adverse effects.
It's much lower for children. In 2006, the National Research Council
reported the basis for those levels should be reduced.
Case Reports by Cao and Yi in the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry
(February 2008) "Tea and fluorosis:"
--A 57-year-old Englishman's misdiagnosed Paget's disease (weakened
bones) with osteoarthritis was finally correctly diagnosed as skeletal
fluorosis caused by his long-term heavy tea-drinking habit.
--A Pakistani woman's dental fluorosis resulted solely from tea which
she consumed from age two.
--A 36-year-old Chinese woman's ten-years of joint pain disappeared
when she stopped drinking tea.
--French doctors identified 5 patients who developed bone softening
(osteomalacia) from drinking tea.
-- An American woman's fluoride-caused debilitating joint pains
disappeared when her two-gallon-a-day iced-tea habit stopped.
"By 2020, one in two Americans over age 50 will be at risk for
fractures from osteoporosis or low bone mass," according to the
Surgeon General.
"It's clear that fluoridation is increasing Americans' bone damage;
but US physicians are not trained to diagnosis fluoride-caused
disease. Presidential and other candidates must pledge to stop water
fluoridation if they truly care about individuals and not
fluoridation-supporting special interest groups such as the American
Dental Association," says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York
State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. "Meanwhile the Tea
industry needs to label the fluoride content of their products."
Fluoride is in many foods as determined by the USDA
www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=6312
According to American Dental Association, the adequate intake of
fluoride to avoid moderate fluorosis (yellow teeth) is:
-- 0.01 mg/day for 0 to 6-month-olds
-- 0.5 mg/day for 7 through 12 months
-- 0.7 mg/day for 1 to 3-year-olds
-- 1.0 mg/day for 4 to 8-year-olds
Mild fluorosis is white spots, lines or blotches to the teeth and can
occur at levels lower than the above.
The CDC reports that fluorosis afflicts up to 48% of US school
children - 4% of it severe.
Both the ADA and CDC advise that infant formula should not be mixed
with fluoridated water.
New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation
www.orgsites.com/ny/nyscof
www.FluorideAction.Net
Past News Releases: tinyurl.com/NewsReleases
References:
Food Chemistry, "Safety evaluation on fluoride content in black tea,"
by Cao et al. COOL: 1 hr.
1 c. margarine
1/2 c. cocoa
2 Tbsp. honey
4 eggs
2 c. sugar
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 Tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped walnuts
12 oz. chocolate icing (Use your own icing recipe or purchase some
chocolate frosting. You can also search the Internet for chocolate
icing recipes.)
MINT ICING
5 Tbsp. margarine
dash of salt
3 Tbsp. milk
1 Tbsp. light corn syrup
2 1/3 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. mint extract
1-2 drops green food coloring
1. Melt margarine and mix in cocoa. Allow to cool. Add honey, eggs,
sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well. Add nuts. Pour batter
into a greased 9-by-13 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
Cool.
2. Prepare mint icing: Soften margarine. Add salt, corn syrup, and
powdered sugar. Beat until smooth and fluffy. Add mint extract and
food coloring. Mix. Add milk gradually until the consistency is a
little thinner than cake frosting.
3. Spread mint icing over brownies. Place brownies in the freezer for
a short time to stiffen the icing. Remove from the freezer and
carefully add a layer of chocolate icing.
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

Wow! chocolate instead of fluoride!

Here is something Melanie sent me today from HSI:
"and another thing...
Remember Miles Monroe? He was the owner of the Happy Carrot health
food store who went into the hospital for an operation in 1973, but
was mistakenly sent to a cryogenic unit where he was frozen. When he
was brought out of his sub-zero coma 200 years later, he discovered
that over the course of two centuries scientists had determined that
hamburgers, French fries, and milkshakes were health food.
If you recognize that moment from Woody Allen's film "Sleeper," you
might think you've awakened in the year 2173 when you hear about a new
study from Tulane University.
According to a NutraIngredients-USA report, the Tulane team tested a
cocoa-based extract (which contains a compound commonly found in
chocolate) on human tooth enamel. The extract was more effective than
fluoride in fighting cavities.
The researchers have already developed toothpaste that includes the
extract. But why stop there? Why not put it directly into our water
supply and replace all that nasty fluoride?
Chocolate toothpaste and chocolate water – and no more problems
coaxing kids to brush."
Rima wrote:The Fluoride is there to numb and dumb us, not for the
tooth decay issue at all (which we now know to be totally bugus, and
so does the FDA, by the way).
But Fluoridated people are tractable and easily controlled.
That's why the Russians used it in the gulags, why the Nazis used it
in the concentration and slave labor camps and eventually on their
populations and why it is used in the US!
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

StemTech introduces new product that helps blood flow

At its recent convention, StemTech introduced a new product called StemFlo to supplement StemEnhance.

While StemEnhance aids the release of stem cells from the bone marrow, StemFlo will help stem cells reach the parts of the body where they are needed, said Melanie Fisher, an independent distributor.

To get to all corners of the body, stem cells are carried with nutrients, oxygen and blood cells through the body's circulation system. More stem cells circulating in the blood equates to greater health.

According to the company, "maintaining good circulatory health is paramount to helping our body perform at its best." StemFlo supports optimal blood flow.

In addition to helping the circulation of stem cells to every part of our body, good blood flow delivers life-sustaining nutrients and oxygen to every organ and tissue, while removing detrimental toxins and wastes.

Making sure this transport system is functioning to its fullest potential is critical to our body's ability to maintain health. StemFlo helps do this.

Depending upon a number of factors including age, lifestyle, diet and exposure to environmental toxins, our circulation system can become compromised resulting in a reduced ability for our circulatory system to "traffic" or deliver stem cells, nutrients, and oxygen to all parts of the body. Things like oxidative stress, poor digestion, an over-production of fibrin can all contribute to a reduction in the ability of stem cells to do their work.

However, when blood flow is increased, stem cells, nutrients, and oxygen can be delivered to areas where they are needed, helping to maintain optimal health.

Three-way Defense

StemFlo digests fibrin, reduces oxidative stress, and helps detoxify the body.

1. StemFlo contains enzymes that help digest fibrin and minimize the effect of fibrin buildup thereby ensuring optimal blood flow in smaller blood vessels and capillaries.

2. StemFlo contains some of the most powerful antioxidant ingredients available today. By helping to lower oxidative stress, StemFlo helps keep oxidative damage and fibrin production in check.

3. StemFlo contains ingredients which have been shown to assist in the elimination of toxins from the body.

In clinical studies, StemFlo was shown to improve blood circulation within thirty minutes of consumption. The study showed increased blood circulation in capillaries as well as substantial reduction in blood markers associated with fibrin production and oxidative stress.

And, scientific studies support the beneficial properties of StemFlo's ingredients.

StemFlo includes the following ingredients:

Fibrinerase - A proprietary blend of plant-based enzymes that help digest fibrin and debris in the blood supporting optimal blood flow.

Mangosteen - An extraordinary fruit originally from Southeast Asia that is well known for its antioxidant properties.

Berry Extract - A special formulation of berry extracts with proven high antioxidant potential designed to neutralize the production of damaging "free-radicals" in the body. STEMTech uses only extracts which have a high ORAC and CAP-e values. ORAC and CAP-e are the industry standard for measuring the effectiveness of any antioxidant product.

Cat's Claw - Also called the "Sacred Herb of the Rainforest", this tropical vine which is found in the jungles of the Amazonian Basin, provides potent unique antioxidant support.

Rehmannia - A powerful herb from China used to support optimal blood circulation.

Curcumin - Extracted from the Turmeric plant, curcumin has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia to help cleanse the blood and detoxify the body.

Silicate - Rich in minerals, silicate has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties to help reduce oxidative stress. STEMTech uses one of the world's finest silicates from the United States.

Melanie Fisher (www.stemcellrevival.com) can be contacted at 660 562 3331 or 660 525 2752. I thought I should share
it with all of you. It won't cost you anything and won't take much
time and could save you or one of your Stem Tech friend's life or
years of suffering.

"For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to
you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the
cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed.
It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the
acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than
the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn
into fats and lead to disease. It is best to drink hot soup or warm
water after a meal."

Personally I suggest we all drink a good brand of HOT HERBAL TEA as we
eat our meals. Once you developed the habit I am sure you will enjoy
it. And it will help keep the fatty substance in your meal from
solidifying. The best part is it only costs pennies a day. In fact PPO
is so bad that the National Hot Rod and American Motorcycle Racing
Associations have banned its use, because it is so dangerous.
Even after the process, growers can label their almonds as "raw." Raw
almonds are normally rich in flavonoids, which are known for their
antioxidant activity. Antioxidants have been proven to fight against
cancer and heart disease.
http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/abstract.cgi/jafcau/2006/54/i14/abs/jf0603937.html
Dr. Robert Verkerk of the Health Freedom Foundation said that "even
with a few seconds exposure to steam, some of the vitamins and enzymes
will be degraded from their original state. This creates the risk that any non-physician who uses them could be held to be practicing medicine without a license. These practices could be considered "Medicine" and any products intended for such use could be considered untested drugs and therefore could be forbidden.

The FDA is accepting comments about this "Guidance" until May 29, 2007. You can make comments about "Docket: 2006D-0480 - Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration" by going to: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/oc/dockets/comments/commentdocket.cfm

This is the comment I sent to the FDA in regards to Docket 2006D-0480: "I assert my fundamental right to control my own health and health care. I want Complementary and Alternative Modalities ("CAM") to be freely available and not described under FDA guidelines as medicine. The FDA should not be involved nor regulate non-drug alternatives to health care. No effort should be made to classify alternative health care products as drugs. I favor a market approach to regulate their sale. Prescriptions should never be required."

More information about this proposal is available at HealthFreedomUSA.org: http://tinyurl.com/2u7ghc
Copyright 2006 Fisher House Publishers

Moms and vitamins

A new study reports that women who take multivitamins before and during pregnancy may be less likely to have children who develop brain tumors in early childhood.
Greta Bunin and her team from the Children's Hospital Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania found that their study combined with previous work link moms' multivitamin use with lower risk of kids' brain tumors.

The study indicated that mothers who reported taking multivitamins close to the time of conception were 30% less likely to have a child diagnosed with a brain tumor before the child's 6th birthday.

Bunin studied 315 children aged 0-5 years with a brain tumor called medulloblastoma. To make a comparison they also interviewed mothers of 315 children without brain tumors.

There is no promise that vitamins will prevent kids' brain tumors nor will all women not taking multivitamins have children with tumors. Brain tumors are rare in children (about one in 20,000 children), and doctors don't always know the reason they occur.

Pharmacist Paul Scavone (correspondence dated October 2, 2006) suggests these tips for anyone looking for a multivitamin.

Get enough folate. Men need 600 mcg; most women 800 mcg; and pregnant and nursing women 1000 mcg.

Don't use time-release vitamins, because you don't always get the contents of the vitamins. It is better to take vitamins throughout the day.

Avoid too much iron. There is no mechanism for excreting iron once it's absorbed into the body. Iron is either used or stored and excessive storage of iron in the body causes free radicals which may cause of cancer and heart disease. It also increases the risk of bacterial infection.

SOURCES: Bunin, G. Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention, September 2006; vol 15: pp 1660-1667.
